Soft Skills Training Template: Difficult Conversations

For managers and team members who have to give feedback, settle a conflict or deliver bad news. The AI colleagues get defensive, go quiet or push back, like real ones. Each session is scored on clarity, listening and how the conversation ended.

Training goals included

Each goal becomes a scored objective. Completed sessions are rated against it, so a manager sees which goal a trainee still misses.

  • Communicate clearly and adapt to different audiences
  • Build trust and rapport in professional relationships
  • Handle difficult conversations with confidence
  • Give and receive constructive feedback effectively

Scenario briefs

Four starting situations. Each one is a role play script template: the setting, what the AI persona wants and what the trainee has to achieve.

Feedback on missed deadlines

A good team member has missed three deadlines. The manager has to name the facts, hear the reason and agree on a change without damaging the relationship.

Conflict between two colleagues

A colleague accuses another of taking credit for their work. The trainee has to listen to the accusation, separate facts from feelings and propose a next step.

Pushing back on a manager

The trainee's manager assigns an unrealistic deadline. The trainee has to disagree with data and propose an alternative without sounding uncooperative.

Announcing an unpopular decision

The manager has to tell the team that a popular project is cancelled. The goal is honesty, a clear reason and room for questions.

Who you practice with

Defensive team member

Receiving feedback

Explains, justifies and brings up other people. Opens up when the facts are stated calmly.

Angry colleague

In conflict

Talks fast and generalises. Tests whether the trainee listens before judging.

Demanding manager

Authority figure

Short on time and sure of the deadline. Respects a counter-proposal with numbers.

How to use this template

  1. Choose the skill focus

Pick a focus such as feedback or conflict resolution. The setup asks about your context and the situations your people avoid.

  2. Review the colleagues

Adjust their relationship with the trainee: a peer, a report or a manager changes the whole conversation.

  3. Practice and compare over time

Trainees repeat the scenario at a harder level. Skill progress is tracked across the last five sessions.

Questions about this template

Can trainees practice their own real situation?
Yes. The scenario can be described in a few sentences, and the persona plays that colleague. Many teams rehearse a conversation the day before it happens.
How is a soft skill scored?
Completed sessions are rated on clarity, listening, rapport and whether the conversation reached its goal, with written feedback on specific moments.
Is this suited to first-time managers?
Yes. The feedback and the deadline scenarios are the two conversations new managers struggle with most, and the difficulty can start easy.
